Why every e-commerce business needs to be blogging

5th October 2017

I’ll be the first to say that blogging can be daunting. It’s hard to make sure that what you’re writing is relevant, factually correct and engaging at the same time, believe me! But, even if you’re not the next Shakespeare, if you’re running an e-commerce store, you need to be blogging.

Blogging has so many benefits and can be a low cost marketing activity if you do it in-house. More importantly, blogging is a fantastic way to build your audience, which will increase traffic to your site ultimately bring in more sales!

Still unconvinced huh? Well, we’ve outlined just a few great reasons to start getting your blog on.

Google loves a good blog

Okay, so Google doesn’t read every blog individually. But blogging is a brilliant way of improving your SEO. For starters, with regular blog posting, Google will see that your site is regularly updated, increasing the crawl rate of your site and thus increasing your ranking in Google.

You’ll find that you’ll rank better for key phrases as you’ll be able to naturally incorporate those long tail keywords in. Frankly, there is nothing worse than looking on a homepage that has clearly been stuffed with keywords. Blogs are a great, natural way of driving traffic to product pages.

You can brag about how great you are

I know it’s very un-British but as an owner of an e-commerce store, you are experts in what you’re selling! Why not tap into that fountain of knowledge?

Blog posts are a great way of demonstrating your expertise and building credibility within your industry.

Say for example you sell vintage wine online. You could write a blog on the best wines from around the world that are featured on your website and let people know what makes them so special. Not only will this demonstrate your expertise on wine, it’ll also drive traffic to the products on your website at the same time!

You can also share these blogs on your social media pages. It’s so much easier to increase your engagement from blog links rather than just links to your product pages.

Cheap & Easy

A WordPress blog is easy to set up and if you’re currently using Sellerdeck Hosting, we can give you a helping hand!

We appreciate the fact that if you’re running an e-commerce store, you may not have the time to do blogging as well as social media, fulfilling orders, updating your products etc. But, let me reassure you, blogs don’t have to take a lot of your time. They can be short pieces, maybe expanding on something you’ve posted on your social media page or a bulked-out product description. You can even link to a related news article. Whatever you do, just do something to get that fresh content!

Take a look at one of our previous blogs, giving you advice on content creation and writing.

So, where should I start?

If you’re looking for a little bit of inspiration for blog topics, why not try one of the following:

Frequently Asked Questions: This is a great starting point for a blog. Collate some of those questions that you’re regularly asked and write a blog post about it. You’ll easily be able to incorporate some keywords and phrases in there as well as saving time having to answer the same question over and over again!

History of your business: Give an insight into when and more importantly why you started business. You are experts in your field, let people know why!

Tutorials: Give a few tips and tricks on how to use your products. If you don’t have time to create a step by step guide, then why not embed a link to an external tutorial video.

Top Tip guide: Take it from me, I am always looking for advice on how to do things properly. Say you’re selling running shoes, why not write a blog post giving your top tips on how to survive a marathon.
